From the Lab subscription service is for those who want the latest and greatest beauty products before they are released to the public
New subscription service From the Lab has agreements with several cosmetic laboratories to provide three full-sized products each month to subscribers, ranging from skin care items to color cosmetics to hair care. These lab samples may later be marketed by large beauty companies, and the retail cost may be between $40 to $200.
We will receive lab runs of the products before they are mass produced, so it is a limited supply six to 18 months before they are in retail from the major brands,” said creator Steve Dworman. “The labs do not see this as being competitive with their other customers because we are only selling limited runs and only selling to our membership online. We can gather information about the products themselves, about what women like and what they don’t like. We are not selling the information, that is not part of the deal, but it enhances their ability to resell.”
There won’t be tons of fancy packaging – the products will come in lab containers commonly used by the labs and marketing departments. Nor do there seem to be any big marketing pushes coming, as the company is going to primarily rely on word-of-mouth to spread the news of their service.
In addition to From the Lab, Dworman and co-founder Lorraine Dahlinger are introducing a beauty content Web site called Inside Beautiful, which will be guided by editor Desiree Stordahl, who coauthored the book “Don’t Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me.”
